MODAL VERBS

  • DEFINICIÓN: Los verbos modales son verbos diferentes al resto de los verbos. Tienen una serie de características especiales. Estos verbos pueden expresar: obligación, necesidad, prohibición, ausencia de necesidad, probabilidad, posibilidad, habilidad…

  • CARACTERÍSTICAS:
    • Son verbos incompletos. No tienen participio ni infinitivo, y necesitan otros verbos para completar su conjugación: CAN se completa con la perífrasis BE ABLE TO, MUST con HAVE TO, etc.
    • No llevan -S en la 3ª persona singular del presente simple, excepto HAVE TO (HAS TO)
    • Todos van seguidos de otro verbo en infinitivo sin TO, excepto OUGHT TO, HAVE TO y NEED TO.
    • Como no necesitan verbo auxiliar, construyen la interrogativa invirtiendo el orden del sujeto y el verbo, y la negativa añadiendo NOT. ¡¡OJO!! CANNOT

REMEMBER THE TITANS

BOOKS IN BRITISH HISTORY


Frankenstein.
Written by Mary Shelley in 1818, uses elements of the Gothic novel and Romantic movement. Frankenstein's chilling tale suggests modern organ transplants, tissue regeneration, that remind readers of the moral issues raised by today's medicine.



The Last Man
It´s the other famous novel of Mary Shelley, being identified as the first work of modern apocalyptic fiction.




The Vampyre.
Written by John William Polidori in 1819. It created the literary vampire genre. Making Varney the Vampire, who has fangs, leaves two puncture wounds on the neck of his victims, has hypnotic powers, superhuman strength, and was also the first example of the “sympathetic vampire”, who loathes his condition but is a slave to it.
